Niog-niogan, a potential source of antioxidants

Niog-niogan (Ficus pseudopalma) is a potential source of antioxidants, say researchers at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) after analysing the leaves to find compounds with potential pharmaceutical use.

Niog-niogan, an endemic medicinal plant in Luzon, is traditionally used in treating various illnesses like kidney stones.

Results of laboratory exams identified the compound lupeol from the leaves of Niog-niogan which isknown for its antioxidants properties. Antioxidants are known to prevent diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, based on the report of World Health Organization (WHO).

With their findings, they recommended further analysis on niog-niogan as a candidate for drug discovery and development.

This study was funded by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST- PCHRD) and published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine.
