San Juan de Dios Educational Foundation Inc. and Hospital strengthens health R&D access for their researchers through HERDIN

When San Juan de Dios (SJD) learned about the Health Research and Development Information Network (HERDIN) through the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board’s (PHREB) requirement for hospitals to register approved studies, they were informed about Republic Act 10532, which mandates that research shall be registered in the Philippine Health Research Registry and, upon publication, in the national repository of published health research.
In response, the Hospital and College of SJD invited the HERDIN team of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) to organize a two-day orientation on November 20–21, 2025. Faculty, students, and staff were introduced to HERDIN, from the registration process to the steps required for research submissions to comply with both PHREB and legal standards, while reinforcing the principles of ethical conduct in health research.
Mr. Julian V. Corpus, Chair of the Institutional Review Board and Director of the Quality Assurance Division of the Hospital, together with Dr. Marlyn Mabalot, Director of Research, Development, and Innovations / Quality Assurance, coordinated with the HERDIN team to meet PHREB’s requirements and the provisions of the law. Their initiative led to the orientation, which helped both the hospital and the college gain clear understanding of the procedures and expectations for proper registration of their research.
The orientation introduced HERDIN’s features and guided participants through the proper process for registering studies in the Philippine Health Research Registry (PHRR). Dr. Rosana C. Tala, Vice President for Education, emphasized its benefits: “The orientation helped us understand how HERDIN supports the accessibility of health research studies, providing both the Hospital and College with a straightforward process for meeting PHREB’s requirements.” This underscored how the sessions clarified expectations for staff and researchers and strengthened compliance with the law, and promoted wider access to health research.
Following the orientation, San Juan de Dios is preparing to formalize its partnership with HERDIN and utilize additional services provided through the Council to support its research activities.
