2026 Photo Essay Contest winners showcase Heart for the Filipino

The Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) highlights the winners of the 2026 Capture the HeaRT in Health Research Photo Essay Contest, celebrating visual stories that highlight compassion, innovation, and the impact of health research on Filipino lives.

With the theme Heart for the Filipino, the contest showcased compelling photo essays that emphasize how research and technology translate into meaningful health outcomes for communities across the nation.

Through these photo essays, we see that health research is not only about data and discoveries, it is about people, stories, and real impact,” said the DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr.. “These narratives remind us that at the heart of every scientific advancement is a commitment to serve the Filipino.”

The contest featured two categories, highlighting both DOST-PCHRD-supported research initiatives and stories from the general public:

DOST-PCHRD Supported Projects Category

1st Place & People’s Choice Award: Gentle Paws: Healing Through the Eyes of a Therapy Dog by Abbygail Cuya, highlighting the role of animal-assisted therapy in mental health.

2nd Place: HeaRT of Resilience by Dr. Windell L. Rivera, reflecting the strength of research communities in addressing health challenges.

3rd Place & Executive Director’s Choice Award: Listening to Silent Strokes by Prof. Edison A. Roxas, emphasizing early detection and awareness of stroke-related conditions.

 

General Public Category

1st Place: Rooted in Science, Grounded in Community by Adrian Fernandico, showing how research connects deeply with community needs.

2nd Place & Executive Director’s Choice Award: LAB LIFE by Bryll Jay C. Carilla, offering a behind-the-scenes look at laboratory dedication and discipline.

3rd Place: From Fields to Findings: Tracking Heavy Metals in Community Foods by Avegail Apor, underscoring research’s role in food safety and public health.

People’s Choice Award: Init ng YAKAP: Ang Kwento ng isang Payak na Ina by Rodney Beniosa, a touching portrayal of care, resilience, and lived experiences.

Now in its fourth year, the Capture the Heart in Health Research Photo Contest serves as a platform for sharing compelling narratives and photographs that connect health research and real-life impact.
