The Problem
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a viral infectious disease caused by the newly discovered SARS-CoV-2. Over the past months, COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in over 210 countries across the globe. In the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 62,713 active cases as of May 5, 2021.

As part of the strategic plan to mitigate the transmission of the virus, the WHO encourages countries to conduct diagnostic testing among individuals who are suspected to have the infection. The collection of specimens for diagnostic testing are conducted by trained healthcare professionals to ensure that collection protocol is strictly followed. This, however, exposes our healthcare workers to higher risk of infection as appropriate facilities for specimen collection are becoming scarce due to the heightened campaign for nationwide mass testing.

The Solution
To address the need for safer, appropriate, and supplemental specimen collection facilities, Futuristic Aviation and Maritime Enterprise (FAME) Incorporated, under the leadership of Mr. Augusto Martinez III, has successfully designed a Specimen Collection Booth (SCB) through the research funds granted by the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) and Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD). The SCBs are equipped with secured ventilation and barrier between the healthcare workers and patients which allows specimen collection without direct contact. The booth also has pressure and infrared temperature sensors, and interior and exterior disinfection instruments. Each booth is also built with two pairs of caster wheels making the units easy to transport.

To date, FAME Inc. has already fabricated 132 units of their COVID-19 SCBs. The units are already deployed to various hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country through the assistance of DOST and the Philippine Coast Guard.

Product Development Stage
The COVID-19 Specimen Collection Booth is at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9. The technology is already being used by different hospitals and health facilities throughout the country. The proponents decided to give away the design for free to support the healthcare system in fighting COVID-19. Coordination can also be made through the DOST Regional Offices.
