THE PROBLEM

Management of acute traumatic wounds, particularly those that cannot be closed primarily, remains a global clinical challenge. While Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) has become a standard treatment since its introduction in the 1990s, access is often restricted due to the high cost of commercial devices. In resource-constrained settings, the need for affordable and effective alternatives is critical to improving patient outcomes, reducing healing time, and minimizing hospital stays.

THE SOLUTION

The Aquavac Advanced NPWT system is a locally developed, cost-efficient alternative that delivers the same therapeutic benefits as commercial models. Built using a compact design, the device features automatic pressure regulation with leak detection and comes with a 12-hour continuous or 24-hour intermittent battery backup. Priced at Php 50,000 with an initial package of dressings and canisters, the device enables outpatient treatment, reducing hospital dependency and cost. Additional consumables are available for Php 1,500 per set, further enhancing its accessibility.

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT STATUS

Aquavac Advanced is at Technology Readiness Level 9, signifying full commercial availability. Following a startup grant, 100 units were produced, with 20 units sold since the April 2024 launch, generating Php 1,000,000 in revenue. The product has been showcased at key conventions, including the Philippine Orthopaedic Association and the Philippine College of Surgeons. Clients include physicians, hospitals, and wound care centers—one facility has procured five units. The product’s adoption in both institutional and home care settings highlights its utility and growing demand.

CURRENT NEEDS

The project team is actively seeking distributors and funding for expanded marketing efforts. Prioritized channels include conventions for general, orthopedic, and plastic surgeons. Current partnerships include a wound care clinic in NCR, with expansion efforts targeting other regions such as Bacolod. Educational initiatives and device training in collaboration with hospitals are also underway. To support further growth and reach, the team welcomes strategic partnerships and investment, and invites interested parties to send letters of intent.
