THE PROBLEM

Diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing in the Philippines, yet existing dietary assessment methods remain manual, time-consuming, and prone to recall errors. Individuals and health professionals lack accessible, real-time tools to monitor food intake and evaluate diet quality, limiting timely interventions and effective nutrition management.

THE SOLUTION

Artificial Intelligence Nutrition Assistant (AINA) is a mobile application that uses AI to automatically identify food items from images and quickly evaluate your diet. The system estimates serving size, energy intake, and macronutrient composition, providing accurate, data-driven insights for users, health practitioners, researchers, and food industry professionals. The platform is meant for people, nutrition and public health professionals, researchers, people who work in the food industry, and other interested stakeholders. These groups can utilize AINA to easily keep track of and assess their clients’ food intake and overall diet quality. This will help them make better decisions and take more effective actions.

Unlike other dietary apps that use images, AINA is trained specifically on selected Filipino foods to make sure it can identify them more accurately. It also does real-time nutrient analysis in addition to food identification, making it perfect for the local context.

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT STATUS

AINA is currently at Technology Readiness Level 5. A prototype has been completed and further validation studies are ongoing.

CURRENT NEEDS

The project team is seeking technical partnerships to support full system development and deployment.
